Siphokazi Mawisa, Eastern Cape police spokesperson, said the fire-fighters fled bushes along the road after police made use of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. The national road has now been opened for all vehicles, Mawisa told Maroela Media, after only smaller vehicles could be over there because the wrecks of the burned vehicles had to be removed. “The situation is now under control,” she said, “but we remain on the scene to monitor it. “Officers are investigating a case of intentional property damage, but by late Wednesday morning no-one has yet been arrested. The riots on Stutterheim began just over a month ago when residents of a local township in front of the municipal building in the town spoke against unemployment.
